Higher fuel prices should not alter your RV fun. Today’s fuel crisis looks nothing like that of the 1970’s, when inflation was a dirty word and pump lines stretched for blocks. The “I” word is hardly used (thanks to low interest rates), and gas stations are eerily vacant, with many avoiding stops at the pump for fear of emptying bank accounts.

How this situation will affect your travel plans remains to be seen, but there are ways to enjoy a trip and still manage to save.

Once again, the Internet proves to be a great resource for budget-conscious travelers. Check out these online resources and see which works best for your proposed route. This also works in your home town.

GasPriceWatch.com This is a consumer advocacy website that tells you where you’ll find the best gas bargains. You just plug in the zip code of where you’re headed and you get a search results page with stations and their locations and current gas prices. How does GasPriceWatch.com keep track of all these fluctuating numbers? They use a team of volunteer “spotters” who call in rates on a regular basis.
Gasbuddy.com is another helpful site which provides links to local real-time sites that track fuel information. This portal for more than 170 gas price information web sites provides a live forum for consumers to post local recent low and high gasoline prices. Since gasoline prices change frequently and may vary by as much as 20 percent within only a few blocks it is important to be able to locate the service station with the lowest priced fuel.
Check with your campground for their knowledge of local fillup spots. We hate it when fuel prices go up. But we’re not going to cut our travel out completely. If we have to cut out something else, so be it. I would rather pay the higher price per gallon if I can afford it, rather than a lower price if I could not afford it. The price of fuel is higher than before, but our desire to make our trips is higher.
